Fundamental Principles
The guiding principle in all JAMA & Archives Journals publishing endeavors is to assure physicians and others receiving scientific materials produced by JAMA & Archives Journals that the information:
- is as accurate and reliable as possible at the time,
- has undergone the journal’s rigorous scientific peer review,
- has been prepared with the highest degree of professionalism throughout,
- provides information that is intended to be of benefit to individual patients and to the public at large.
In order to ensure that reprints and e-prints of JAMA & Archives Journals adhere to these principles, maintain the integrity of the original JAMA or Archives Journal article, and do not imply endorsement of a product or influence by an organization, we thoroughly review all reprint and e-print requests prior to sale and reserve the right to reject any proposal that does not adhere to these
standards. Each reprint request is subject to approval by the American Medical Association (AMA), which reserves the right to reject orders deemed not in keeping with the JAMA & Archives Journals publication standards.
Ownership of Copyright
Materials published in JAMA & Archives Journals (including subsequent translations thereof) are owned and copyrighted by the AMA. Materials under AMA copyright remain the property of the AMA and may not be reproduced in any form without written permission from the publisher. The AMA encourages reporting of any suspected unauthorized use to a JAMA & Archives Journals publishing project manager. The AMA is responsible for securing all necessary permissions.
Content
All editorial content from JAMA & Archives Journals must be reproduced verbatim for a reprint or e-print and should incorporate any published corrections to the original content (with a notation that the article has been corrected) or append the correction to the end of the article. Reprints or e-prints are not available from JAMA or any Archives Journal prior to publication. Articles published online ahead of print may be purchased as e-prints or reprints on the date they are published online, provided they meet all the criteria listed above.
In the event that a correction is necessary for an article, reprints or e-prints of the article will be unavailable until the correction is published.
Purchase Agreement
Through a request and a letter of agreement or a purchase order, the organization will request to purchase a reprint, an e-print, or a reprint collection, in a specified quantity, for distribution to a defined audience.

Such a page may be a Web page or an e-mail message, but each are subject to the JAMA & Archives Journals Fundamental Principles and product-specific conditions approval process.
The publishing project manager will generate a URL link with which the purchasing organization can establish password-free access from the supporting company's linking page to the e-print PDF and will maintain this link for the duration of the agreement.
Rights-Protected PDF-based e-Print
Access to a PDF That Does Not Reside on the JAMA & Archives Journals Web Sites
This e-print is a rights-protected PDF of the article(s) that is similar in appearance to a paper reprint. Rights protection will define aspects such as the number of copies a user may print, e-mail, or download.
Rights-protected PDF-based e-prints will include the cover page and running footer requirements described in the paper-format reprint section of these standards.
Prescribing information or disclaimers required or approved by a government regulatory body (eg, FDA) may be included with a PDF e-print subject to the JAMA & Archives Journals Fundamental Principles and approval process. When prescribing information is included, a buffer page with disclaimer information (described in Single-Article Reprints, Paper Format, item 4) will be required. Such information will be attached to the original article PDF and then locked (rights protected) prior to delivery.
The company Web site and specific page and/or e-mail from which the rights-protected PDF e-print will link are subject to the JAMA & Archives Journals Fundamental Principles and product-specific conditions approval process.
The e-print will be produced and delivered by the publishing project manager.
An organization may purchase multiple e-prints on a related subject and these may be packaged together via links or bundling multiple articles into a single rights-protected PDF. When these electronic packages consist of articles not related by editorial notation in the original publication, they will be subject to the JAMA & Archives Journals Fundamental Principles and product-specific conditions approval process.
